The Three Qualities of Good People
Character is the aggregate of all the things that make a person good. There are three qualities of good people that we commonly refer to as integrity, compassion, and competence.
Integrity is the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles. A person with integrity does not act in ways that are inconsistent with their values or beliefs. They do not lie or cheat and do what they say they will do.
Compassion is the quality of feeling empathy for others and having concern for their well-being. A compassionate person feels bad when others suffer, and does what they can to relieve their pain or help them recover from it.
Competence is the quality of being able to carry out tasks well, be it in academic study, professional life, or personal pursuits like hobbies. Competent people are skilled at what they do; they know how to get things done; they have expertise in some areas; they can use this expertise to achieve success in different settings. Successful people take action; they are focused and determined; they manage their time well to achieve desired outcomes, and they set clear goals.
